Battery Powered Canned Heat Replacement
Canned Heat is used in the catering business to keep food warm. One problem with this method is that it uses an open flame and some facilities don’t allow that. The flame is also a bit unregulated and you have to watch how close it is to things. It can destroy the bottom of your pans.
Project and Challenges
A client of ours was combatting this by using an electric heating element like the type you would find in a solid surface cooktop. They solved their open flame problem and the resulting heat was now more consistent but their heaters were still tethered to an outlet. When you are catering you don’t always have the convenience of an electrical outlet nearby. Extension cords running about are unsightly and they are also a tripping hazard.
Solutions and Their Impact
Tutco-Farnam solved these issues with a custom heater that plugs right into a rechargeable battery. The client wanted to use a battery like you’d find in a cordless power tool so it would be easy to recharge and then you could easily set up a bank of chargers in the back of your catering operation ready to go. No more extension cords. You just plug your heater right into it and swap out the battery when you need a new one. The client had a list of very specific specifications that they asked us to hit including cook and ramp time. We hit every single one of them.
